XVI National Council of IYCS kicks off at Shillong

Shillong, May 21: Around 140 delegates representing 12 regions of the Indian Young Christian Students/Young Students Movement(YCS/YSM) from all over India have gathered at Bethel from May 19-28 for their XVIFormation Session and National Council on the theme’ Student’s education in Modern Era’.

Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, Archbishop of Shillong, Rev. Dominic Jala stressed upon the need of young people to come together and work on putting themselves in the service of the society through the guidance of God.

He applauded the efforts done by YCS/YSM movement in this region and wished the participants all success. He also thanked the National Chaplain Fr. Charles for organizing this programme in the Northeast which would make a big difference in the ongoing faith formation of the young budding teenagers.

Local MLA of Umsning, C Lyngdoh , while speaking as the Guest of honour quoted, “do not let evil get into you”. He exhorted the youth to understand that evils are present and we need to accept their existence but allowing them to enter into our minds will only mark our downfall.

The Inaugural mass was offered by Archbishop of Shillong Rev Dominic Jala, accompanied by Bishop of Itanagar and North East Regional Youth Chairman, Most Rev John Thomas, National YCS/YSM Chaplain Rev Fr Charles Menezes and a host of other priest from all over India. The inaugural program saw a host of intra-cultural displays in the form of songs and dances from various groups including Umroi aspirants of MSMHC, Guwahati Youth, Jesus Youth Shillong, Fernando Speech and Hearing Centre students, Mr. Edward and St Theresia Choir from Shillong.

The 10 day National Council aims at responding with concrete plans to the issues affecting the society by enlightening and empowering the students to face the society. Exposure to NGO groups, schools and other institutions in the city on Tuesday has helped the students in understanding realities of society using the YCS methodologies of SEE-JUDGE-ACT.
