Rev. Fr. Merwyn Fernandes SJ
The All India Catholic University Federation (AICUF) is a movement of university students committed to building a new and just society. Any university student, irrespective of religion or caste, studying under a catholic institution can be part of the movement. So it is a student-centric movement under the federation of Catholic universities. It focuses on forming young people to be socially responsible, spiritually grounded, and intellectually aware through active participation in social realities.
Vision
To empower students to develop a spirituality centered on human dignity, fostering involvement, reflection, and commitment towards creating a just and humane society.
Objectives
1. To enable students to develop a critical awareness and analysis of the Indian and world situation, to cultivate a deep and genuine concern for the oppressed and marginalized and to effectively commit themselves to the task of building a new and just society.
2. To help students evolve spirituality that has humanization as its core, through involvement and reflection.
3. To motivate students to become involved in studies, research and activities within the university.
4. To enable Christian students to play a prophetic role in their communities through a critical understanding of their faith, drawing inspiration from the Gospels, the Eucharist and their prayer life

found it.
Brief History
All India Catholic University Federation (AICUF) is one of India’s oldest student movements, founded in 1924 by Fr. Carty SJ at St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli. It began as the Catholic Young Men’s Guild (CYMG), aiming to help students deepen their faith, develop leadership skills, and contribute to society.
As the movement expanded, it became the South Indian Catholic University Federation (SICUF) in 1937 and later the All India Catholic University Federation (AICUF) in 1947, growing into a nationwide student movement. It was officially recognized by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) in 1948 and is affiliated with Pax Romana, that is the International Movement of Catholic Students (IMCS).
