Empowering the Youth: A Session with the Young Priests

On July 22-23, 2025, the “Formation and Vocation Promotion Commission” organized an “Ongoing Formation Program” for priests ordained within the last 10 years in collaboration with the Youth Commission. The enriching sessions were designed to strengthen the spiritual and pastoral foundation of young priests as they walk alongside today’s youth.

The Regional Youth Director, Rev. Fr. Ashwin Lohith Cardoza, led dynamic sessions that delved into the key trends shaping the youth today, their struggles, aspirations and the vital role of the priest as guide and shepherd. Emphasizing the three indispensable ‘P’s of the youth ministry: Prayer, Patience and Presence. Through thought-provoking visuals and deep reflections, Fr. Ashwin highlighted the priest’s role in rescuing the youth from confusion and Isolation, inspiring them to persevere and to seek meaning beyond the visible world.

The young priests raised certain concerns, which were acknowledged and addressed by Fr. Ashwin. He further assured that some of the concerns raised were already being addressed, and plans were in place for the coming months. He confirmed that necessary actions would be taken to implement these plans.

Adding a unique dimension to the program, Sr. Molly illickal, the Regional Lady Animator, shared valuable insights on the psychological well-being of the ministers themselves. She stressed the importance of inner healing for oneself, especially when ministering to the young minds in crisis.

Nevin Antony, the former ICYM president and coordinator of the KRYC council, shared his heartfelt experiences with the gathered group of young priests, highlighting how the priest’s intervention, support, and encouragement helped him flourish as a youth. He humbly acknowledged that his success is largely due to the priests who believed in him and provided him with the chance to grow and bloom in the field of youth ministry. Nevin Antony’s journey is a shining example of how the guidance of priests can profoundly impact a young person’s life. He attributes his growth as a vibrant and effective leader to the instrumental role played by the priests in his life. He remains grateful to the priests who have been the ladder to his success.

Our gratitude extends to Fr. Bonaventure, the Regional Secretary for Formation and Vocation Promotion, for his efforts in facilitating this exchange and sharing our concerns with the young priests who are well-positioned to connect with the youth.
